#Regram #RG @nrdc_org: Within the boreal forest of Canada, the Broadback River Valley Forest stands out as the last remaining stretch of intact forest on the @CreeWaswanipi’s ancestral land, vitally important to their spiritual and hunting needs. Most of the land is already overtaxed by logging. Indigenous hunters report declines in moose, marten, beaver, and muskrat — staples to Cree traditional livelihood. As a former Waswanipi Youth Chief explains, "All of the traditional cultural activities that we practice out there on the land, that's who we are, that's us. Our culture's out there on the Broadback. Our identity is out there on the Broadback. That's why it's so special and so crucial to protect." To learn about the Waswanipi Cree’s fight to save the Broadback River Valley Forest and the larger fight to save the Canadian Boreal, visit the link in our profile. #SaveTheBoreal

Bordered by Tanzania, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Burundi, and Zambia, the lake is the second oldest, largest and deepest freshwater lake in the world. #Regram #RG @nrdc_org: Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke has proposed opening almost the entire U.S. coastline to oil drilling. That would endanger coastal communities, the tourism and fishing industries, and our fragile ocean ecosystems. The law requires Zinke to take public input on his proposal. Some 110,000 NRDC members and activists voiced their opinion, and they are not happy with Zinke’s plan. Take action in our profile link!

Climate change affects every living thing on the planet. #Regram #RG @lionrecovery: Why does the world need lions? Here are two simple reasons: 1) Lions play a critical role in keeping the food chain in order, helping to regulate herbivore species, such as zebra and buffalo. By controlling their numbers, lions ensure Africa's fragile eco-systems remain in balance. 2) The African lion is a global symbol, signifying power, intelligence, and strength. Thousands of people from around the world travel to Africa to see lions. Tourism is a major boost to African economies and lions continue to be the biggest attraction. #Regram #RG @leonardodicapriofdn: Forests, grasslands, mountains and wetlands are essential for water security. Natural ecosystems have a vital role to play in securing water resources -- regulating water flow, ensuring water quality, and reducing impacts from natural disasters. Our new paper launched with @undp on #worldwaterday called “Nature for Water” details the need for environmental conservation to help address the growing water crisis. #Regram #RG @nationalwildlife: Both the House and the Senate are debating our nation’s finances for 2018, including funding cuts to important conservation programs as well as anti-wildlife policy measures which would likely fail on their own. Among these harmful measures are attempts to repeal or undermine the Clean Water Act, the Clean Air Act and the Endangered Species Act. Not only does this jeopardize legions of wildlife, it also could put humans at risk of greater harm. Urge your members of Congress to stand up for wildlife by saying NO to cuts in conservation funding, and NO to measures that will harm the environment. Wildlife ranging from bighorn sheep, manatees, moose, and horseshoe crabs will thank you for it! http://bit.ly/2Hhw7Ft

#Regram #RG @na******eo: Photo by?@amivitale?With a heavy heart, I share this news and hope that Sudan's legacy will awaken us to protect this magnificent and fragile planet. Yesterday, Joseph Wachira, 26 comforted Sudan, the last living male Northern White Rhino left on this planet moments before he passed away. Sudan lived a long, healthy life at the conservancy after he was brought to Kenya from?@safari_park_dvur_kralov?in the?#czechrepublic?in 2009. He died surrounded by people who loved him at?@olpejeta?after suffering from age-related complications that led to degenerative changes in muscles and bones combined with extensive skin wounds.?Sudan has been an inspirational figure for many across the world. Thousands have trooped to Ol Pejeta to see him and he has helped raise awareness for rhino conservation. The two female northern white rhinos left on the planet are his direct descendants. Research into new Assisted Reproductive Techniques for large mammals is underway due to him. The impact that this special animal has had on conservation is simply incredible. And there is still hope in the future that the subspecies might be restored through IVF. In 2009, I had the privilege of following this gentle hulking creature on his journey from the snowy Dour Krylov zoo in the Czech Republic to the warm plains of Kenya, when he was transported with three of his fellow Northern White Rhinos in a last ditch effort to save the subspecies. It was believed that the air, water, and food, not to mention room to roam, might stimulate them to breed—and the offspring would then be used to repopulate Africa. At the time, there were 8 Northern white rhinos alive, all in zoos. Today, we are witnessing the extinction of a species that had survived for millions of years but could not survive mankind. Follow @olpejeta and @amivitale to learn more about how we can protect these magnificent creatures. @na******eo?@na******eocreative?@olpejeta?@kenyawildlifeservice?@thephotosociety??#SudanForever#WorthMoreAlive?#OlPejetaRhinos?#NorthernWhiteRhinos?#protectrhinos?#DontLetThemDisappear?#rhinos?#saverhinos?#stoppoaching?#kenya?#northernkenya?#africa?#everydayafrica?#photojournalism?#amivitale
