"How someone could want to shoot such an intelligent, empathetic animal as an elephant is beyond me…But what is most concerning for elephants is that renewed imports of trophy ivory into the US might undermine the all-important ivory trade bans put in place by America and China.” -Frank Pope, CEO of @SavetheElephants, a grantee of the @LeonardoDiCaprioFdn with the @ElephantCrisisFund on Trump’s decision to reverse the ban on imports of elephant trophies from Zimbabwe into the US. #Regram #RG @paulnicklen: Climate change is real. It’s time to stop debating this inconvenient truth, and instead direct our collective energy towards good decisions for the planet. Big change comes from small adjustments. Some ways to #doyourpart include avoiding plastics, choosing certified fish, and volunteering your time to a cause for change. #Regram #RG @dailyoverview: Palm tree plantations surround the city of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The trees are cultivated in terraces cut into the contours of hills, to avoid erosion caused by streaming water. Malaysia is now one of the world’s largest exporters of palm oil – used primarily as a cooking ingredient – shipping nearly 18 million tonnes per year. The rapid expansion of palm oil plantations in the world’s tropical regions is becoming an increasingly significant source of carbon emissions. Clearing the native trees to make space for the palms is projected to add more than 558 million tonnes of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere by 2020 – an amount greater than all of Canada’s current fossil fuel emissions. /// Created by @benjaminrgrant, source imagery: @digitalglobe

#Regram #RG @na******eo: Image by @joelsartore | Golden-headed lion tamarins like this one photographed at the @dallas_world_aquarium are named for their striking, golden-orange manes around their faces. When threatened, these primates will fluff up their manes in order to make themselves appear larger and try to frighten their predators by flicking their tongues. They live in lowland forests of Brazil and are endangered due to severe destruction of their habitats. In the past 20 years, 50% of the golden-headed lion tamarin population has been eliminated, and if their habitat continues to be destroyed, we can’t expect to see them in the wild for much longer. Fight deforestation by living more sustainably. Vote with your dollar by making informed purchases of furniture, paper, and other rainforest-harvested items. #Regram #RG @oceana: #DidYouKnow that corals may look like rocks, but they're actually made up of tiny individual animals? Reefs grow slowly and can take thousands of years to form, but they are the foundation of healthy ocean ecosystems. Fish hide and hunt among the coral, and reefs also protect shorelines from damage during strong storms. Today, coral reefs are stressed, and as a result, are expelling their color. To stop coral bleaching, we must embrace renewable energy - and fast. : ? OCEANA / Eduardo Sorensen #corals #coralreef #coralbleaching#climatechange #oceans #globalwarming#marinelife #StandForOceans

#Regram #RG @bertiegregory: A lettuce coral covered in anthias in the Northern Red Sea. The diversity (the number of different species) of coral reefs is mind blowing. It is estimated that whilst they only occupy 1% of the ocean floor, they are home to more than 25% of the ocean's biodiversity! Coral reefs all around the world are in trouble but why should we care? Well, aside from just being awesome, they provide so many functions that are vital to human existence including coastline storm protection, fisheries production, tourism and climate regulation.
