The Jamaican Iguana is not found anywhere else on Earth except Jamaica. Aggressively hunted by invasive predators, like the Indian Mongoose, the iguana was thought to be extinct until 1990 when it was accidentally rediscovered. Ever since, the Jamaican Iguana Recovery Group has been working to save the species. They bring iguana hatchlings from the wild to the Hope Zoo in Kingston, where the iguanas, about the size of a pinky finger, enter a head start program. After 5 or 6 six years, when they are large enough, they return to the wild in the Hellshire Hills on the mainland. But the Hellshire Hills can only hold 1,000 iguanas. Goat Islands, a wildlife sanctuary, can hold 10,000 iguanas. But before scientists can start reintroducing iguanas there, they have to rid Greater Goat Island of invasive predators. Within the next few years, they may be able to start reintroducing iguanas on Greater Goat Island and help secure them from extinction. #Iguana #Jamaica #JamacianIguana #Caribbean #GoatIsands #Wildlife #WildlifeSanctuary #EarthOptimism #ConservationOptimism Photo: @robindmoore @global_wildlife_conservation
